The Tiger Woods scandal: Where are the boundaries?

In sports on December 3, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Tiger Woods has been in the public eye since he was a child.

His image has been so squeaky clean that it was the subject of jokes and derision.

The car crash outside his Florida home and his subsequent silence has resulted in a parade of women claiming to have had affairs with the PGA legend.

The media has treated Tiger differently than other public figures who have had similar kinds of news stories.

Recently actor Sean Penn found himself in a similar situation as did singer LeAnn Rimes, yet the media did not engage in the same kind of feeding frenzy that has accompanied the Woods story.

Woods broke no laws, caused no physical harm to another and has led attempted in a noble way to protect his family and preserve his marriage. Excerpt for more, CLICK HERE.

ABC’s ‘V’ Slams Obama and Pelosi

In Politics on November 6, 2009 at 7:53 pm

An amazing thing happened at a recent debut of a much-touted ABC pilot.abcvlogo.jpg

A not-so-subtle message was sent to a large viewing audience.

The targets of the TV communiqué were Democrats in power. If you can believe it, the Obama administration, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and the Democrats in Congress were smacked by Hollywood on a major television broadcast.

Rather than use the tired old clichés of villainous conservatives, Christians, gun owners or Republicans, the new show “V” went after the current D.C. free-enterprise-destroying agenda, and did so with an interplanetary vengeance.

Sci-fi tales are known as the repository for parables that describe current circumstances in society. Orwell, Huxley, and H.G. Wells wrote social commentary in the form of narrative fantasy. “1984″ was a warning about totalitarianism, “Brave New World” showed the consequences of science without moral limitations, and “War of the Worlds” displayed the danger of complacency.

Mystery Shrouds Defense of Accused Letterman Blackmailer: ‘Screenplay’ Defense?

In Celebrity Crime on October 5, 2009 at 8:22 am

How did a veteran “48 Hours” producer end up being accused of a $2 million blackmail attempt on David Letterman? madonna-letterman.jpg

“There is another side of this story,” Gerald Shargel, attorney for Robert J. Halderman, said. “This story is far more complicated.”

What could the plot to the other side of the story be?

Halderman has already entered a “not guilty” plea to first-degree attempted grand larceny.

According to Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau, Halderman wrote to Letterman stating that he needed to “make a large chunk of money.” Attached to his letter was a one-page screenplay treatment, which described how Letterman would have a “ruined reputation” after details of the CBS “Late Show” host’s sexual relationships with young female employees were revealed.

The 51-year-old producer used a novel method to deliver the “screenplay.” Early in the morning on Sept. 9 the letter and other materials were left in the back seat of Letterman’s car, which was parked outside his Manhattan home.

Michael Moore Calls Capitalism ‘Evil’

In Hollywood, Movies, Politics on September 7, 2009 at 6:15 pm

He debuted his latest sham documentary called “Capitalism: A Love Story.”

Thanks to the free enterprise system, Moore has become super wealthy, which makes the two-hour flick a case study in hypocrisy.

“Capitalism is an evil,” Moore proclaims, “and you cannot regulate evil.”

According to Moore, regulating capitalism doesn’t work, so his prescription is, “You have to eliminate it and replace it with something that is good for all people and that something is democracy.”

Guess it all depends on what the meaning of “democracy” is.

Fidel, Hugo, Van, Nancy, and Harry might have a similar definition. Someday someone might ask the president what his is.

In any event, the flimflam filmmaker even stoops so low as to bring in some liberation theology clergy to endorse the idea that capitalism is actually anti-Christian…

Denzel Washington to Play Obama in Biopic

In Celebrities, Hollywood, Politics on July 26, 2009 at 8:31 pm

President Obama has expressed his wish that if a movie were ever made about him, he would want the starring role to be given to Will Smith.

Part of the reason for the Smith preference has to do with the size and shape of both men’s hearing appendages.

Casting, though, is an unpredictable activity particularly when the movie role is that of a current president.

According the U.K. Daily Mail, Smith isn’t going to get the Obama part, but instead it’s going to go to Denzel Washington.

The Oscar winner reportedly wanted the role and Obama has apparently given his approval.

“It was at the President’s suggestion,” Denzel said.

The actor did additionally mention one potential issue that may have to be addressed by the make up artist.

“The only problem is he has bigger ears than me,” Denzel divulged.

Michael Jackson’s Children and the Custody Question

In celebrity, law on July 12, 2009 at 8:23 pm

by James Hirsen

After the touching tribute Paris, daughter of Michael Jackson, gave her daddy at the memorial service, media attention turned to the future of Jackson’s three young children.

Despite the fact that the court gave Michael’s mother, Katherine, guardianship over Prince Michael, Paris and Prince Michael II, the legal tug-of-war over custody continues.

Because the two older children, Prince Michael and Paris, were born to a married couple, under California law there is a presumption that the custody of minors will be granted to the legal parents. That presumption of custody would result in the surviving parent, Debbie Rowe, getting custody.

In the past, pursuant to an arrangement with Jackson, Rowe attempted to give up her status as legal parent, but she later returned to court and had her parental rights restored.

Rowe’s effort to end her parental rights will likely be brought up in the legal discussion, but in the state of California, parents’ rights are not terminated without a judicial investigation and hearing.

Still, the presumption gives Rowe custody of the children, if there is no evidence that refutes the idea the custody is in the best interests of the children. The law allows judges to overrule this presumption based on proof that parental custody would be detrimental to the children.

Everything hinges on the evidence. If evidence is presented that Rowe has little or no relationship with the children, her custody will be denied; if evidence is presented that the children have frequently spent time with her and know her as their mother, she will be given custody.

If Rowe wins custody of the two older children, she may also get custody of the third child, Prince Michael II, despite having no claim as the legal mother, because of the court’s desire to keep all of the siblings together.

Jackson’s will names his mother, Katherine, as guardian and, states that if she were unavailable, the children would go to singer and actress Diana Ross.

However, a will is not normally effective for custody purposes in a case in which one parent’s will deprives another parent of custody.

Jackson, Lennon and Elvis

In Celebrities, Culture, Entertainment and Media on July 5, 2009 at 9:07 pm

by James Hirsen

Michael_Jackson_Elvis_Presley_2.jpg

beatles-1st.jpg

Media coverage of the death of Michael Jackson has reached a fever pitch with his memorial service that is scheduled to take place this week in Los Angeles.

Fans from all over the world have registered for the chance to receive tickets to attend the event, although only 11,000 people will actually be allowed into the Staples Center.

All three networks will broadcast live coverage of the service with their primetime attendant anchors present at the arena.

The cable news channels will feature wall-to-wall coverage of the event, too, and the memorial service will likely be the lead story on the evening news everywhere.

As we have all witnessed, numerous stories of significance involving foreign policy and domestic legislation have been shunted aside in favor of Jackson interviews, retrospectives and specials. This is part and parcel of what our celebrity loving country has come to expect.

Regrettably, the tragic scenario has played out a number of times before. A music icon dies suddenly and unexpectedly, and under a mysterious set of circumstances. Along with Jackson, two other legendary stars come to mind, and their passing had the same dramatic effect on the public and the culture.

It was a chilly December day when John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono finished a routine recording session. They had no idea how deep a darkness would soon fall.

The world at the time was consumed with things other than a former Beatle’s solo career. A new leader, Ronald Reagan, had just been elected President of the United States, with a full slate of issues ahead of him that included a faltering economy and enemies abroad.

As John and Yoko returned to their Manhattan apartment at the Dakota, a disturbed fan, Mark David Chapman, sent four hollow point bullets racing Lennon’s way. Police took the legendary musician to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The media behaved quite differently the day the Lennon music died. The New Media was not yet in force. Cable news programming was still in formation. Much of the public heard the word of Lennon’s death from Howard Cosell during a broadcast of “Monday Night Football.”

Still, news of the former Beatle’s passing spread fast. It was the lead story on all of the major networks and above the fold in newspapers around the world.

As the sad news traveled, crowds gathered outside the Dakota. Much like the throngs who mourned for Jackson in New York, London and L.A., Lennon fans sang songs and recited lyrics in his honor. Yoko Ono asked the mourners to return the next Sunday for a memorial for John. That Sunday, Central Park was overrun with over 100,000 people. A similar gathering took place in John’s hometown of Liverpool with 30,000 people in attendance.

Many radio stations played Lennon music exclusively for several days in a row.

Although John’s death was similar to Michael’s in terms of public reaction, media coverage and cultural impact, another pop music icon passed on under much more eerily parallel circumstances.

His career was fading. His performances had fallen far below expectations with the resultant criticism from the entertainment press. He appeared unhealthy, but he and his handlers decided it was time for a summer comeback tour.

Just like in Jackson’s case, the tour never happened. In August of 1977, Elvis Presley was found dead on the floor of his Graceland home by his fiancee, Ginger Alden.

His death was the lead story on all of the broadcast networks except for CBS, which made it second to a Panama Canal story, possibly because Walter Cronkite was away on vacation.

For years insiders at the CBS newsroom were said to have repeated the words “remember Elvis,” because the network felt as if it had been remiss in its coverage of the star.

The day the Elvis music died dominated the media cycle for weeks on end. Much like the death of Jackson, the cause of Elvis’s death would remain a mystery and consume massive amounts of media airtime.

Early reporting indicated that Presley died from a cardiac arrhythmia, which fit with the excess weight he was carrying. But an autopsy of the legendary singer showed large quantities of a host of drugs including Morphine, Demerol, Valium, Codeine and Quaaludes, some of which were also found in Jackson’s home.

The passing of Jackson, Lennon and Elvis invites the kind of speculation that, like their iconic images, goes on forever.

Lisa Marie Presley: Michael Jackson Feared Elvis-like Death

In Celebrities, Culture, Music on June 28, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Those close to Michael Jackson are searching their memory banks for clues to explain the tragic loss.

Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis, remembered a warning sign from years past that she had received, which in light of emerging information surrounding Jackson’s death is unsettling.

Lisa Marie, in a post on her MySpace page, revealed a conversation she had with Michael when she was married to him. She remembered how, during the discussion, the talk turned to the manner in which her father had died.

“I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did,” Michael confessed. The pop singer was alluding to the tragic death by overdose that Elvis suffered.

Lisa Marie blogged that she had immediately “tried to deter him from the idea at which point he just shrugged his shoulders and nodded almost matter of fact as if to let me know, he knew what he knew and that was kind of that.”

According to Presley, she grew tired from “her quest to save him from certain self-destructive behavior.”

She added, “His family and his loved ones also wanted to save him from this as well but didn’t know how and this was 14 years ago. We all worried that this would be the outcome then.”

Farrah Fawcett, Angel in Waiting

By: James Hirsen

It’s not a typical celebrity passing.

In American pop culture terms, Farrah Fawcett was an icon.

She burst onto the Hollywood scene with her sparkling smile, sweet nature and blonde windblown tresses that set hairstyle trends for a decade.

Farrah’s image adorned magazine covers galore, but more importantly her poster was tacked onto teen lockers, shop halls and office walls.

All-American places. All-American dream girl.

She was cheerleader, prom queen, sorority sweetheart and pageant winner all rolled into one. And she graced her way right on up to full-fledged movie star.

Farrah’s career, from “Charley’s Angels” to the reality genre, was a shining example of an actress who lithely coped with a changing media landscape.

Amazingly, the role that defined her fame, that of glamorous detective Jill Monroe who took assignments from the mysterious Charley, only lasted a year.

The TV show was such a hit Farrah became part of that unusual celebrity club of those stars known by their first names only. If you said Farrah, folks knew exactly who you were talking about.

Like Betty Grable in an earlier era, Farrah became the pin-up girl of her generation. The photo of Farrah in a red bathing suit quickly became the biggest selling poster of all time with an unprecedented 12 million copies sold.

Farrah proved she was more than just a pretty face when she took a part in an Off-Broadway play called “Extremities,” and she received critical acclaim. She then tackled a difficult subject in “The Burning Bed,” a TV-movie about an abused woman. It earned her an Emmy nomination.

She starred in another complex made for TV film, “Nazi Hunter: The Beate Klarsfeld Story.” And she garnered a second Emmy nomination for a miniseries “Small Sacrifices.”

More critical praise for her acting came from her portrayal of a wayward wife to Robert Duvall’s character in “The Apostle.”

When she appeared as herself in the 2005 reality show, “Chasing Farrah,” the public had a glimpse of the deep love she and Ryan O’Neil shared. The tender relationship supplied a sort of tonic to the public, which offset the disappointing failure of marriages that is so widespread from Hollywood to D.C.

Looks like the Angel got her wings.

Madonna’s 7.3 Million Dollar Baby?

In Uncategorized on June 14, 2009 at 10:29 pm

Leave it to the material girl to show folks how to adopt a child from a poor Third World country.

Four-year-old Mercy James, whose Malawian name is Chifundo, is all hers now thanks to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Malawi.

The higher court overturned the lower court ruling that had been a stumbling block in the whole adoption process.

The reason the singer’s attempt to adopt Mercy was stopped, according to the lower court judge, was that Madonna had not complied with rules that mandated that she live in Malawi for 18 months before adopting the child.

In rendering the opinion that let her off the residency hook, Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo said, “Madonna has been judged to be a compassionate, intelligent and articulate person. Her adoption of Mercy James is not a selfish act.”

It could be that the chief justice was alluding to something reported in the U.K. Daily Mirror; that Madonna paid out $7.3 million to fund orphanages and buy shoes, clothes, books and more for the impoverished children.

It’s not the first time Madonna was able to skirt Malawi law. She did it when she adopted little David, too. The interesting thing, though, is that David and Mercy weren’t exactly orphans. They both had family.

At the time of his son’s adoption, David’s dad Yohane expressed regrets and claimed he wasn’t fully informed about the arrangements. Kambewa, the alleged daddy of Mercy has gone on record as being opposed to her adoption as well.

Esme Chombo, the provincial judge of the lower court who had ruled against Madonna, quoted G. K. Chesterton to support the idea of sticking with the rule of law, even in a Third World country.

“Don’t take a fence down until you know why it was put up in the first place,” the jurist said.

Meanwhile Madonna has been seen dating a guy in his twenties. No word yet on whether she plans on adopting him.

Rihanna to Be a Witness for the Prosecution

In Celebrities, law on June 2, 2009 at 9:38 am

Chris Brown had a bad week.

Rihanna’s former boyfriend released a YouTube video in which he told fans he wasn’t a “monster.”

But then he found out that the upcoming court drama is probably going to tell a very different story.

Prosecutors are going to subpoena Rihanna, and she’ll reportedly testify at a preliminary hearing in the case against Brown.

According to the police report, she’s going to have to give the ugly details of that supposed brutal night.

Brown has pled not guilty to the alleged Rihanna beating, and he’s hired high-profile lawyer Mark Geragos to defend him.

If things go along as expected, Rihanna will be subject to cross-examination by Geragos.

Most celebrity cases end up with plea bargains, but if Brown’s convicted he could end up spending more than four years in the slammer.

There’s no truth to the rumor that Rihanna’s working on a new book: “How I Lost 180 Pounds of Unwanted Fat-By Dumping Chris Brown.”

Wanda Sykes Us Out

In Hollywood, Politics on May 10, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Who chose Wanda Sykes to be the featured comic at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner?

Maybe it was the same person who set up the Scare Force One photo op.

The dinner traditionally dishes out humor at the president’s expense.

But Sykes used her moment in the D.C. spotlight to attack conservatives.

She began her routine with a few jokes about President Obama that were actually not-so-veiled compliments.

Not known for her subtlety, she went on to blast talk radio biggies Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and toss cow pies at former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Her jabs at Rush were the harshest and most disingenuous and had no place at the time-honored event.

Sykes falsely “joked” that Limbaugh said he hopes America fails, and she accused him of treason.

She recklessly compared Rush’s comments to those of Osama bin Laden and used the #1 talk radio host’s name and “highjacker” in the same lame joke.

She went on to express, as pathetic liberals are prone to do, her desire that he experience life threatening health problems.

For Hannity, she hypocritically encouraged the use on him of what the Left has deemed “torture” and included a snide remark for bad measure.

When it came to Cheney, Sykes hid behind her lazy wisecracks but inadvertently revealed how unoriginal she really is.

Still, the Hollywood, D.C. crowd (which included Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Natalie Portman, Jonathan Rhys Myers, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes as well as Brian Williams, Helen Thomas, Barbara Walters, Wolf Blitzer and other mainstream media big shots) chortled approvingly.

And according to Variety, White House senior adviser David Axelrod called Sykes “very entertaining.”

Very insidious is more like it.

Barbara Walters to Eject Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Seat Miss California

In Celebrities, Politics, Television on May 3, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Despite her public denials, Barbara Walters reigns supreme on ABC’s “The View.”

The media Jill of all trades calls the shots when is comes to co-hosts.

Walters shoved Rosie O’Donnell off the show a while back, and she’s about to do the same to Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

The reason for Hasselbeck’s ejection? Walters has apparently had enough of her so-called “shrilly-silly views” and “looney-toon responses,” according to the National Enquirer.

Removal of the former “Survivor” star would leave an empty chair on the hosting panel, and it’s the only slot with a conservative vantage point.

Barbara is considering Carrie Prejean, the now famous Miss California, to take Elisabeth’s place.

Prejean has displayed grace under pressure in her unwavering expression about her beliefs on marriage.

Similar to the manner in which the media treated Governor Sarah Palin, attacks on the Miss USA runner-up have been unfair and unceasing.

Walters will likely get a lot of heat for even considering bringing on Prejean especially since the beauty contest winner is now a spokesperson for the National Organization for Marriage.

Here’s a thought: If she really wants to show independence, and maybe a smidgeon of balance, Walters ought to leave Hasselbeck on the panel and give Miss California Joy Behar’s spot.

Lindsay Lohan: ‘I’ve Been a Target’

In Celebrities, Hollywood, Movies, Show Business, entertainment on April 26, 2009 at 10:03 pm

In what appears to be a pity ploy, Lindsay Lohan recently tried to explain why she’s having trouble finding work.

It’s not the ailing economy or any mistake she herself may have made.

No, according to Lindsay, she’s a victim of a media conspiracy.

In a recent appearance on the “Ellen” show, the “Mean Girls” star spoke of a specific gig she had lost.

“I had a really good opportunity with an amazing actor and it’s been put on hold because of this coverage that’s been coming out,” Lohan contended.

Somewhat disgusted, she added, “I didn’t get into this to be a celebrity on the cover of tabloids and I’ve been a target and I’m not that interesting but it’s distracting; it distracts people, studio heads, everyone – they get nervous.”

Someone should tell Lindsay that when execs read reports of eating disorders, drug abuse and unstable relationships, it’s their job to get nervous.

Still trying to make her case, Lohan had a message for her prospective Tinseltown employers.

“I’m ready to work and I’m responsible,” she said.

Stephen Colbert Out of the Conservative Closet?

In Culture, Politics, Television on April 19, 2009 at 9:35 pm

After a parody of the National Organization for Marriage’s “Gathering Storm” ad was featured on his show, a new theory emerged about cable satirist Stephen Colbert.

Could the Comedy Central star’s bits really contain right-of-center messages, making him a genuine closet conservative?

NOM released a statement to the press in which the group’s president, Maggie Gallagher, posited, “I’ve always thought Stephen Colbert was a double-agent, pretending to pretend to be a conservative, to pull one over on Hollywood. Now I’m sure.”

Colbert’s cable character, who is a loosely modeled caricature of Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly, began the segment by showing the original NOM video in its entirety.

The comic shared that he “loved” the footage because it was “like watching The 700 Club and The Weather Channel at the same time.”

“Thank you Stephen for playing our ad in full on national television-for free. HRC eat your heart out. Plus we all had a great chuckle, too!” NOM Executive Director Brian Brown said.

Colbert pointed out that New York Governor David Paterson had introduced a bill to legalize gay marriage and cracked that he “thought Massachusetts would be a gay promised land, a ‘Gaysreal’ if you will, but then the same-sex chickens came home to gentrify their roost.”

He also snapped that gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed in New York because “it’s hard enough as it is to get a wedding announcement in the Times.”

Movie Outing

In Hollywood, Politics, entertainment on April 12, 2009 at 8:41 pm

A new documentary is set to premiere at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, and it’s likely to cause consternation at the nation’s capital.

The promotional poster for the movie describes it as “a searing expose of the secret lives of closeted gay politicians.”

Although the film will purportedly feature familiar gay pols such as Barney Frank, its primary aim is to publicly reveal closeted Republicans who have taken a stand in defense of traditional marriage.

Its publicity slogan is “Do ask, do tell.”

Colleagues of mine who have seen the rough cut tell me that the film will feature politicians who haven’t previously been “outed.”

Kirby Dick directed it. He also made “This Film Is Not Yet Rated,” which ticked off the MPAA.

The executive producer is well-known Left Coast political advisor to the stars Chad Griffin, who was also an advisor for California’s No on Proposition 8 campaign.

Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute produced it, and Magnolia Pictures will be the distributor.

The version of the movie that’s been shown to selected critics is far from finished, and filmmakers are avoiding revealing the identities of politicians who will supposedly be outed.

In any case, the movie is poised to get lots of publicity, which is just what the creators wanted all along.

Tweeting with the Stars

In Celebrities, Culture, Entertainment and Media, law on April 5, 2009 at 7:06 pm

Lately Twitter has been getting a terrabyte’s worth of celebrity buzz.

After a tweeting addiction got pinned with the blame for John Mayer’s breakup with Jennifer Anniston, Mayer opined that posting on the micro blogging social network is “inherently silly and inherently dumb.”

He proceeded to put up a non-silly and fairly astute post on the subject of self-esteem.

“Living by the power of other people’s suggestion will slowly kill you. Genuine self esteem isn’t a roller coaster. It comes from within,” Mayer texted.

Look for esteem or something like it to end up in a new Mayer song.

Meanwhile Demi Moore’s Twitter wits may have helped save a life.

A distressed woman had sent the “Charlie’s Angels” star an ominous Twitter message that read: “Getting a knife, a big one that is sharp. Going to cut my arm down the whole arm so it doesn’t waste time.”

The alert actress and Ashton Kutcher spouse forwarded the terrible tweet to her 350,000 Twitter followers, adding this supplemental message: “Hope you are joking. Everyone I was very torn about responding or retweeting that woman’s post but felt uncomfortable just letting it go.”

Demi’s followers sprang into action and contacted the police who were able to find the woman and prevent the potential suicide.

“Thanks everyone for reaching out to the San Jose PD,” Moore later tweeted. “I am told they are aware and no need to call anymore. I do not know this woman…”

“It is my understanding that the situation was not a joke and that through the collective efforts here action was taken to provide help!” Moore added.

It just goes to show that social networks can be used for more than mere amusement.

They can be twitterly important and at times tweetastic.

BTY, I’m a twitterer, too, and if you’re so inclined please forward me your choicest news twips and H-tweets.

Twanks.

Bill and Tony’s Excellent Adventure

In Uncategorized on March 29, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Just what we needed, a movie, likely to be jointly produced by HBO and the BBC, called “The Special Relationship,” which will take us on a trip down Memory Lane to a time when our TV sets were filled with Clinton smut.

The “special relationship” apparently refers to the political one between Bill Clinton and Tony Blair and not the “inappropriate” one between little Willie and Monica Lewinsky, although that will supposedly be included, too.

Dennis Quaid will portray the ex-prez and Julianne Moore will play Hillary.

In a hint about how the story will be told, the writer and director is Peter Morgan, the same guy who penned “Frost/Nixon.”

Why can’t Hollywood come up with some more current script ideas, like the story of a man who worked at Freddie Mac, the mortgage entity with an accounting scandal that led to a major management shake-up and huge fines; the story of the same guy being on the board and taking in more than $300 grand for the gig; and the story of a dubious dude who goes on to become chief of staff to the President of the United States.

“Rahmbo,” with a cliffhanger of an ending, would make for a good flick.

Brad Pitt Too Good Looking to Play D.C. Reporter?

In Uncategorized on March 22, 2009 at 8:06 pm

tn2_brad_pitt_1.jpgDirector Kevin MacDonald says he’ s relieved that Brad Pitt pulled out of the upcoming movie “State of Play.”

Washington, D.C. journalists aren’t likely to be too happy about it, though.

MacDonald says he’s glad Pitt’s not in the flick because the dude is just too handsome to play a D.C. reporter.

The flick’s storyline is based on a BBC mini-series in which an investigative reporter works with a police detective to solve a murder involving a congressman’s mistress.

MacDonald says the journalist is supposed to be a bit of a schlump, and Pitt can’t play a schlump so he’s hired Russell Crowe.

Luckily for the director, the congressman is played by Ben Affleck who happens to be quite adept at playing schlumps.

Obama’s PR Team Boosts Rush Limbaugh’s Ratings

In Hollywood, Politics on March 15, 2009 at 7:38 pm

The Obama White House has inadvertently done something for Rush Limbaugh that the best media operatives in the world would give their Fendi shades to be able to do for their clients.

After picking the conservative icon to be its Alinski-style target, the Screwtape Squad has almost doubled Rush’s already staggering radio ratings.

We can only imagine that the “geniuses” will try and pin the idea on the other guy-Rahm will blame it on Gibbs, Axelrod will lay it on Biden, Geithner will cuss out Holder, etc.

The attempt to make Rush the leader of the GOP has resulted in more folks than ever being educated about true conservative principles.

Talkers magazine shows Limbaugh’s weekly audience has shot up from 14.2 million to about 25 million since he was targeted by the bumbling media masterminds.

But the icing on the cake is that fewer people will now buy the idea that Rush is a ***! (Fill-in-the-lefty blank).

In an unrelated bit of unsubstantiated rumor, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Committee on Tolerance and Compassion plans to eliminate a previous designation that had been used to describe Hollywood actors, directors and producers who were self-proclaimed Republicans.

Based on current policy changes being implemented by the Obama administration and international law, now even conservatives, Christians and Southern white males who are known to have strong to loose ties with the GOP Party will no longer have to wear the “enemy combatant” label.

A spokesperson for the Academy stated that the change of moniker was the result of an extensive review of policy relating to those with “out of favor” ideology.

“The policy alteration that we have made today meets with our standards and will serve to make our industry stronger and justicier,” spokesperson R.U. Kidding said.

As a result of the new terminology, Hollywood GOP-ers will now be referred to as “unemployed detainees.”

Liam Neeson Upsets PETA Over Horse Carriage Controversy

In Uncategorized on January 25, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Liam Neeson has Pink peeved.

He’s also made Chrissie Hynde crabby.

Why are the two singers steamed?

It’s over New York’s tradition of offering tourists horse-drawn carriages.

Forever in search of a cause, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) group has started a protest over the carriages because of alleged mistreatment of the horses.

Neeson, a self-professed horse person, claims that horses are not mistreated but actually pampered.

“They’ve been there for a 100 years and they’re an iconic part of New York,” the actor said. “I know many of these guys and I just hate how the horse-drawn carriage industry is being attacked by animal activists.”

“These are the fittest, well-fed, best-kept horses I have ever seen. I’m a horse rider and lover for many years. They have a good life. They work nine-hour days and they have a holiday. Seriously. If you’ve ever seen these stables… I’d move in tomorrow,” Neeson added.

PETA officials responded, saying, “Liam, maybe you’re right, let me ponder this for a moment… It does seem like horses would prefer to endure the freezing cold and the panicky booms, noisy traffic, and exhaust fumes of the city over living in a lush pasture.”

Guess only Mr. Ed can answer the question.

Don’t Miss Gary Sinise on Fox!

In Politics, Television, celebrity on January 9, 2009 at 4:17 pm

Veteran critically acclaimed CSI actor Gary Sinise’s special will be on the Fox News Channel Saturday January 10 at 9 pm ET.

“With the help of the USO, my brother-in-law Jack, and my friend Jonathan Flora who used a handheld camera, you will see what happened on a seven day trip I took to Iraq last summer which will air this Saturday night on the FOX News Channel,” Sinuse said.

“It was my fourth trip there with the USO. My goal, as always, was to cover as many miles as possible and to take pictures, sign autographs and shake hands with as many troops as I could in the time I had. Stops included bases in Kuwait and in Iraq – Al Asad, Al Qaim, Ramadi , Habbaniyah, TQ airbase and Baghdad.”

“It was the first time I have let a camera follow me around on one of these trips. Over the last six years, I have traveled around the world and all over the United States to visit and perform for our troops with the USO. I have supported many grass roots efforts as well and visited our wounded in the hospitals several times. I could not be more honored to play a small part in helping our troops and their families. We can never do enough for our veterans who have sacrificed so much to keep this nation free.”

Barack Obama Raises the Dead

In Culture, Music, entertainment on January 5, 2009 at 8:42 am

The remaining members of legendary jam band “The Grateful Dead” were not getting along very well.

Fans of the group, who are known as “Deadheads,” were concerned that they would never again be able to sit cross-legged on a concert floor as their favorite San Fran group let loose with one of their trademark hour-long tunes.

But now, no doubt to the Deadheads’ delight, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzman, the original members of the Grateful Dead, have announced that they will do a tour in April 2009.

These days the group is simply known as “The Dead.” Interestingly, members haven’t toured together for four years.

Why the reconciliation? Barack Obama, of course.

The four rockers got together in October 2008 to perform at Penn State for an Obama fundraiser.

Three of the band members played an earlier Obama money generator in February 2008.

Hart told Rolling Stone that the Obama fest “broke the ice” and added, “We were able to let some of these skeletons in our closet just fall away.”
